Established in 2003, the park was the first territorially designated and managed marine protected area in the U.S. Virgin Islands, protecting coral reefs, sea grass beds and wildlife habitats. Sixteen acres at Estate St. George in Frederiksted, St. Croix, where more than a thousand Caribbean and pan-tropical plants grow among ruins and repurposed buildings. The grounds were an 18th-century Danish colonial sugarcane plantation, on a site occupied for roughly 2,000 years. It also holds the St. George Village Museum, in a restored colonial-era worker's cottage, and a herbarium of over 6,000 pressed specimens.
