Boat-day decision tool · USVI & BVI

Tell the captain what kind of day you want.

Build a route conversation around your start, available hours, desired vibe, and stops that make geographic sense together. VibeVI shows planning estimates and tradeoffs; the qualified captain decides the safe, legal, current route.

Direct answer

Choose fewer stops that share a route.

For a four-hour charter conversation, start with one cluster and two meaningful stops. For an eight-hour day, add contrast—beach plus snorkel, or social plus quiet—without jumping between distant island groups. Treat every BVI plan as a full-day international trip and get the operator's current clearance, document, authorization, weather, and return estimate before booking.

Interactive planning worksheet

Build the conversation before you meet the captain.

Choose a start, a four- or eight-hour planning window, and up to four stops. The route line is schematic and the time band is distance math—not a navigational course, schedule, weather answer, or promise that a stop is usable.

Choose stops

Unknown access or conditions never become a positive recommendation. Every card names the captain check.

Up to four

Great St. James

Christmas Cove

A close-to-Red-Hook cove that can combine a water stop with boat-access food context.

Captain check: Confirm current protected-area rules, mooring or anchoring options, conditions, and any food operation directly.

St. John

Trunk Bay

A North Shore beach and underwater-trail context for a beach-plus-snorkel request.

Captain check: Confirm NPS boat access, moorings, water conditions, fee status, and actual trail suitability on the day.

St. John

Maho Bay

A North Shore seagrass setting where wildlife may be present, never promised.

Captain check: Check current NPS access and marine conditions; keep distance from wildlife and do not treat sightings as guaranteed.

How the estimate works

Useful enough to plan. Honest enough to change.

1

Distance, not a course

The tool connects approximate public planning points and calculates direct nautical distance. Reefs, channels, exclusion areas, no-wake operation, vessel limits, and the captain's actual course can change the trip.

2

A deliberately wide speed band

Underway time is rounded upward using 16–24 knots. That is a comparison assumption, not the speed of your booked boat or permission to operate at that speed.

3

Stop and buffer allowances

Each stop gets an editorial planning allowance based on the kind of activity. The result is meant to reveal an overloaded plan, not schedule the captain's day.

BVI border-time estimate

Historical range, never an official Customs time.

VibeVI uses a 60–180+ minute total allowance for international processing across a USVI-origin BVI day. That range is an editorial conclusion from traveler reports and operator context, not a time published by BVI Customs, CBP, or a port authority. Reports vary from short waits to multi-hour delays, so the high end is not a ceiling.

The planner therefore treats 60–180+ minutes as a separate total border allowance for a USVI-origin BVI day. Ask the operator what they expect for the exact date, vessel, port, party, and re-entry process.

Plan by vibe, not by a generic top-ten list

Make the tradeoff visible.

Easy beach day

Choose one geographic cluster, protect real shore time, and ask how passengers reach the beach from the vessel.

Snorkeling-led day

Pick one or two nearby water contexts, state every swimmer's ability, and let current conditions determine whether either is usable.

Social with a quiet reset

Pair a harbor or beach-food context with one nearby nature stop instead of stacking distant bar names.

Icon day

Build around the landmark. A long-range Baths request is more honest with one main objective than four rushed checkboxes.

The five-minute captain conversation

Give priorities, not instructions.

The goal is to stop arriving with no input. A good brief tells the captain what matters and what can be dropped when the day changes.

  1. 1Name the exact pickup point and hard return deadline.
  2. 2Rank the top two vibes and the one must-have stop.
  3. 3State swimming ability, mobility, age, motion, shade, and restroom needs.
  4. 4Ask which requested stops actually cluster on today's safe route.
  5. 5Agree on the first stop to drop if clearance, weather, crowds, or timing change.
  6. 6Confirm documents, BVI authorization, park rules, fuel, food, fees, and cancellation terms directly.

Evidence and freshness

Official facts stay separate from estimate inputs.

Official sources establish destination identity, protected-water context, entry obligations, and where to check current conditions. Traveler reviews and operator pages inform only the wide historical border-time allowance; they do not override an authority.

Water-roadmap questions

Is the VibeVI water roadmap a navigational chart?

No. It is a guest planning worksheet for a conversation with a qualified captain. Straight lines, approximate map points, distance math, and time bands do not establish a safe course, weather window, access, authorization, mooring, or usable destination.

How does VibeVI estimate boat travel time?

VibeVI calculates direct point-to-point nautical distance and shows a rounded planning band at 16 to 24 knots. It does not include the actual course, vessel limits, no-wake operation, fuel stops, dock time, sea state, or delays. The captain's current estimate controls.

How much BVI Customs time does the planner include?

For a USVI-origin BVI day, VibeVI displays a separate 60 to 180-plus minute historical border allowance. It is an editorial conclusion from past operator and traveler reports, not a time published by BVI Customs, U.S. CBP, Immigration, or a port authority. Delays can exceed the range.

Can I use this planner for a half-day trip to the BVI?

VibeVI fails closed on that request and does not recommend fitting an international crossing into its four-hour planning window. Ask an authorized operator for a current, vessel-specific answer.

Does VibeVI know today's water conditions?

Not on this page. Open the current National Weather Service marine source, relevant park notices, and operator guidance, then follow the qualified captain's safety decision. A named stop never proves suitable conditions.

Next step

Choose the operator after you know the day you want.

Browse the charter directory, then talk to the operator about the boat, the route, what the day costs, and what happens if the weather turns.
