The grounds were an 18th-century Danish colonial sugarcane plantation, on a site occupied for roughly 2,000 years. It also holds the St. George Village Museum, in a restored colonial-era worker's cottage, and a herbarium of over 6,000 pressed specimens.

Over 19,000 acres of submerged and dry land a mile and a half off St. Croix, protecting endangered elkhorn coral reefs and holding a marked underwater snorkel trail. Trails on the 176-acre island lead to an observation platform. Reachable only by boat, with concession trips from Christiansted Wharf or Green Cay Marina.
